Guidelines on Effective Community Involvement and Consultation
Professionals in all manner of disciplines are tackling the intricacies of consultation and effective community involvement. In the case of planners in the UK, and those in allied activities, recent legislation adds new obligations to existing, long standing commitments for public participation, and accordingly all planning authorities must now produce statutory statements on public participation. In England statements of community involvement (SCIs) have been developed. In Wales similar documents have been prepared under the title community involvement scheme (CISs); whilst in Scotland, the Planning etc (Scotland) Act 2006 uses the term ‘participation statement’. Specific advice and guidance on the preparation of these documents is available from a variety of sources.
